Last Week [06]

Hello all! I've been in a happy mood this week, because my exams ended on Monday. Hurray! Sadly I was so tired I didn't even go celebrating. I'm still tired to be honest, but that's because I've been a busy little bee. I did some serious sketching, made a felt tablet cover, started sanding down our staircase and I even started painting the first layers. My muscles are in such poor shape! I had a very bad night after the first day sanding. My arms & shoulders were hurting like hell! Luckily I ran out of paint, I'll have to take the day off today. :)

Goedemorgen!

Last year it was slugs, this year it's snails. #notfunny // My last exam was Photoshop II, where we had to study formulas and learn about the inner workings of the program. Not what I had hoped this course would be... (but I passed!)

Red currants are so yum! And the birds all left them for me this year! // I ordered some fabric, so hopefully I'll have two new dresses soon!

// Nieuwe stofjes! Hopelijk binnenkort twee nieuwe kleedjes.

My new graphic tablet cover, so happy with the result! // I spent quite some hours on the hair, but it's like a guilty pleasure for me. I now it's not realistic, but it's just so much fun to draw it this way. ^-^

A small project that started three days ago and still isn't finished... // How was your week?

DIY Felt Tablet Cover

Back in January I got this amazing birthday present from the Boy. He got me a graphics tablet! I had one of these a couple of years ago and I couldn't get the hang of it. But this one was so easy to use! I loved it! I took it with me to school a couple of times and it just sat in my backpack without proper protection, which I really didn't like. I wanted to make a fitting cover, but I didn't have the time to do it.. until now.

I started by taking measurements. I added 1,5cm extra to compensate for the width of the tablet (5mm) en for the seams. Whenever I sew felt I tend to take very small seams, because it's all visible afterwards when they're to wide. Cutting away the excess also isn't that easy. I ended up with a 7,5mm seam on both sides and it worked perfectly. I drew the dimensions directly onto the felt.

You'll need to pieces of felt for your cover. I cut one piece to about the height of my tablet. I added some extra mm's for the seam on one side. I wanted a little flap so I could close the cover. When I cut the second piece of felt I made it a bit higher then the first. I added an extra 7,5cm. I went for a quick and easy closing solution and decided to use a strip of velcro. At about 6cm from the top border from the longest pieces of felt I added a running stitch, because I thought it would make the bending of the felt easier.

On the shortest piece of felt I stitched a little pocket. This way I can't lose my tablet's usb-cable. My drawing pen also got a little holder on the front of the cover. After I pinned all the pieces to my felt, it was an easy ride to sew them all together. I really like working with felt for small projects like these, it's very quick and you'll end up with something that looks good. Apart from a little trimming I didn't add any finishing touches.

A couple of months ago I also made a cover for my laptop using felt. The pieces were a bit thicker (about 5mm thick as opposed to the 3mm thick felt I used now). It wasn't as easy to handle as the little pieces now. So a few tips if you want to work with felt:

  • Try cutting your pieces of felt as even as possible. The better they're cut, the easier everything will fit when you start sewing
  • Try using as small a seam as possible, otherwise you'll end up needing to trim
  • Try to trim as little as possible afterwards. You'll have to cut trough two layers of felt and that never goes very well
  • Sew slowly, especially when using thick felt, because it's hard on your sewing machine
  • Keep it simple: putting folds in felt really isn't easy

  • Keep it simple: plooien aanbrengen in vilt is niet gemakkelijk!

Last Week [05]

Hehe, I tried something different for this Last Week post. I always liked handwritten elements on photos, so I tried adding some text to my photos. I would also like to make these posts more 'airy', so that my photos can do the talking and I can do less typing. Not an easy task to set for myself, since I always end up with way mire text then I ever intended. What can I say? I like lengthy posts and I cannot lie. :)

One of the assignments of the second semester was the creation of a stop motion movie about a children's poem. I made lots of sketches and story boards, but I didn't finish my movie in time. I hope to finish it in a couple of weeks.

One of our other assignments was making a 44 pages long portfolio magazine that contained (at least) all our graphic design assignments. For another course we needed to make a booklet for a classical music festival.

Suddenly all my deadlines came and went and I had time to play with my pencils again. I'm also very happy with this first cherry tomato. I'm trying really hard not to smother this plant to death by giving it way too much water. Groei!")

So, what crazy (or not so crazy) things have you guys been up to these past weeks?

An Announcement

Yesterday I wrote a whole blogpost and I don't know if it'll ever see the artificial light of our screens. Having to study & being dead tired all the time aren't working well for me... But, that's not what I wanted to write today. Since the school year is coming to a close, I'll probably have more time to write articles again! I'm so looking forward to writing new things (Projects! Crafting!), but I'll probably repost some older things (old content from the Plutomeisje blog). I promise I'll update the articles before throwing them online and I hope you still like them (I do, that's why I want them on this blog). I hope I'll make this blog more the place I want it to be, since it's far away from being there now.

School Projects [5]

This was een assignment for LODO (lay-out & digital formatting). We had to make an advertorial for a tearoom. The text was provided to us and we were free to use whatever images or lay-out we wanted. Since the name of the tearoom was "The Sweet Sin" I decided to go for something pink. I also wanted to draw the desserts, because I often like this look in magazines. And although I still like my drawings, I'm not convinced by how I implemented the lay-out. Oh well, it was at least a nice experiment. What do you think?

A Small Wishlist

Even though I currently spent way to many hours tucked away behind books (it's exam season) I dream of more books. Books of a completely different kind than the aforementioned ones of course. So I've put a little collage together and I'll walk you trough my current wishlist.

  1. The Wes Anderson Collection, Matt Zoller Seitz - Although I haven't seen al the Wes Anderson movies and I wouldn't call myself a fan, I've seen en really liked some of his movies. When I recently was skimming through this book I was struck by how perfect the little worlds of his movies are. The feeling of other worldliness and the way he uses colour in his movies are something I like very much. The book is also interesting from a graphic point of view (which will be my excuse for most of the books in this list), so I'll probably buy this in the foreseeable future.
  2. Show Your Work, Austin Kleon - Austin Kleon's last booklet (Steal Like an Artist) is something I regularly reread when I'm in need of a pep talk or a bit of inspiration. It's not the world's best book ever, but it works for me. So when I discovered he published another one, it went on my wishlist, because, you know, inspirational.
  3. Thinking with Type, Ellen Lupton - I strugled with typograpy a lot during the school year and I know (because they keep telling us) that typography done right is hard. So I think reading up on it and then practising a bit is something that I should be doing this summer. And it's exactly what this book is about.
  4. Harry Potter Film Wizardry, Warner Bros. - I'm rereading the Harry Potter books and I'm loving every minute of it. The first few books are pure nostalgia, the later books are a re-discovery. I can't believe how many things I've forgotten! When I'm finished I'm also going to watch the movies again, hopefully geeking out with this book on my lap. It's about the design of the movies and it also covers quite a bit of the graphic design in the movies.
  5. Making and Breaking the Grid, Timothy Samara - One of our teachers mentioned this book in our Webdesign class as a great guide to working with a grid in lay-outs. And I think I really should look into it, because although our teachers seem to value the grid concept, they explain very little about it. Also, it sounds interesting to me. The grid concept is something you can use in almost any lay-out job and knowing how to play with it sounds like a good plan.
  6. A Game of Thrones, George R.R. Martin - Well, I couldn't make a list without at least one work of fiction, could I? I started watching the first season of the Game of Thrones once, but I then decided I would rather read the books first. I would love reading them this summer and as they count quite a number of pages, I'm pretty sure this'll be all the fiction I can muster in one summer. Hopefully I'll like them.

So, what's on your book wishlist?
