Choose your reader: Bloglovin versus Feedly

I quite often come across people who are wondering how to follow blogs in an easy way. Most people seem to keep all their favourite blogs in a bookmark file or follow them on Facebook, which isn't so easy after all. Luckily there are two awesome websites that'll make your blog-reading life easier: Bloglovin and Feedly. These websites are specifically designed for following and reading blogs. It's very easy to sign up and add new blogs to your feed.

De laatste tijd hoor ik regelmatig mensen vragen hoe je blogs nu eigenlijk best volgt, want al die links en Facebookpagina's bijhouden, dat is toch niet alles. Wel m'n beste lezers daar bestaan oplossingen voor! Toen Google Reader een paar jaar terug ter ziele ging, kwamen er twee heel goede alternatieven op de markt: Bloglovin en Feedly. De bedoeling van deze twee sites is heel simpel: je maakt een account aan en je verzamelt al je favoriete blogs op één plaats.

Bloglovin is, to be honest, not my favourite website for following blogs. I miss some options, but I heard from a lot of people how they love Bloglovin. Everybody can sign up for free at Bloglovin. When you have a blog yourself you can claim your blog, this way it will be linked to your profile on the site. You can add new blogs to your feed by typing in the name in the search bar. Via "edit blogs you follow" under the heart shaped menu button you can edit your blogs, but you can also put them into different groups, which is very handy when you follow a lot of different blogs.

Bloglovin has this very lovely Popular Posts and Find Blogs options, in which you can find trending blogposts or up an coming blogs. Of course, you can find Never Kiss a Cactus on Bloglovin. ;) What I personally don't like about Bloglovin is when you click on a post the site brings you to the blog to read it. I find this a bit tedious because when you want to read the next post you either have to go back to the Bloglovin site and click on the next post or you can click on the "older" arrow, but when you do this you can't choose what post you'll read next.

Bloglovin is om heel eerlijk te zijn niet mijn favoriet. Ik hou van net iets meer opties, maar ik heb al van veel mensen gehoord dat ze wel heel tevreden zijn met Bloglovin. Op Bloglovin kan iedereen gratis een account aanmaken en voor mensen die zelf bloggen: je kan ook je blog 'claimen', waardoor hij gelinkt wordt aan je Bloglovin profiel. Via de zoekfunctie kan je blogs opzoeken en aan je feed toevoegen. Via "edit blogs you follow" in het menu onder het hartje kan je blog indelen in groepen.

Verder is Bloglovin voor heel handig omwille van hun Popular Posts en Find Blogs opties, waar je alle trending blogposts en up & coming blogs kan terugvinden. Je kan Never Kiss a Cactus natuurlijk ook terugvinden op Bloglovin. ;) Wat ik een beetje een nadeel vind aan Bloglovin is dat telkens je op een blogbericht klikt om het te lezen je naar de blog zelf gebracht wordt. Om een volgend bericht te kunnen kiezen moet je terug naar de Bloglovin site. Je kan natuurlijk ook met de pijltjes naar de volgende post klikken, maar dan weet je niet wat er komt en ik kies graag wat ik als volgende wil lezen.

Feedly does satisfies all my requirements. Feedly has a lot of options, so it might take a bit longer to figure everything out. I really like how you can arrange all your blogs into different groups and you can decide on the lay-out of every group separately. If you like to see pictures, you can select the "cards" view, if you want more text, you select the magazine lay-out. You can also decide the lay-out for every blog on it's own, which is so neat! When you have blogs that posts a lot of new articles you can select the "titles" option and you'll only see the titles.

You can sign-up for Feedly with you Google or Facebook account, but if you have a Twitter, Windows or Evernote account you can sign up with those too. Feedly also has this "You Might Also Like" option in which they show you blogs that are similar to the one you're reading at the moment. You can also easily save and tag blogosts and you can share them or add them to a lot of different apps. Feedly also has a very nice app. And when you do like reading blog posts in their original environment: you can switch on that function in Feedly. Adding blogs is also very easy, you do this by typing the name of url into the search bar or by clicking on Ad Content in the side bar. And yes, you can follow Never Kiss a Cactus on Feedly.

So, how do you keep track of you favourite blogs? Do you use a blogreader of Facebook? Of maybe something else entirely?

Feedly voldoet dan weer wel perfect aan mijn behoeften. Door de vele opties vraagt het wel iets meer werk om deze reader uit te pluizen. Om maar iets op te noemen: je kan je posts net als bij Bloglovin sorteren in verschillende groepen en je kan zelf kiezen hoe je deze groepen wilt weergeven. Zie je graag foto's, dan krijg je foto's met een beetje tekst bij, wil je enkel de titels in een lijst zien staan, dan kan dat ook. Je kan ook op de naam van een blog klikken waarbij je alle posts te zien krijgt. Hierbij kan je per blog gaan beslissen hoe die posts moeten weergegeven worden. Bij hele drukke blogs kies ik voor de lijst optie, bij fotografie blogs voor de magazine look.

Aanmelden bij Feedly kan op basis van een Google of een Facebook-account, maar kan ook via Twitter, Windows of Evernote. Feedly heeft ook een heel handige "You Might Also Like" functie waarbij er altijd een paar blog gesuggereerd worden op basis van de blog die je aan het lezen bent. Je kan ook post bewaren, tags toevoegen of de blogpost delen of toevoegen aan een heleboel verschillende apps. Feedly heeft zelf trouwens een hele handig app. En voor wie wél graag posts op de originele blog leest: je kan die functie gewoon aanzetten in Feedly. Blogs toevoegen doe je door ze in de zoekbalk in te geven (of door op Ad Content in de zijbalk te klikken) en ja, je kan Never Kiss a Cactus ook terugvinden op Feedly.

Summer to do list [UPDATE 2.0]

August was a very busy month (with my resits and all) and I didn't manage to tick of a lot of things from my list. All the ones I did finish where from the last part of my list, which wasn't intentional. I still have another month (my summer ends when September ends), so I hope I'll be able to thick of a couple of other things in the next month.

20. Donate lot's of things to a second hand shop We shoved a whole bunch of stuff in our tiny little car and drove to the nearest second hand shop where we dropped everything off. I'm not sure how many things we donated, but it was a lot! There were two boxes with all sorts of stuff, three bags of clothes, a tv, an office chair and a Senseo. I'm probably forgetting a couple of things, but it felt quite nice to know we have so much less stuff lying around.

21. Sell lot's of things on a second hand site I've sold a few pieces of fabric online and I'm planning to dump a whole bunch of things on a second hand website in the next month, so this is still a work in progress.

22. Visit a couple of flea markets I've visited only one flea market so far and I've wrote about that flea market haul a couple of days ago. Next weekend I'll try to visit my favourite flea market in Ghent and hopefully I'll be lucky again.

24. Pass my resits! I'm not 100% sure I passed both of my resits, but I'm 100% sure I passed one of them (graphic design) and 85% sure I passed the other one (workflow). Fairly sure. I'll know my results at September 9th, which is way to long a wait for me, but there's not much I can change about this. #patience

Augustus was een heel erg drukke maand. Ik besteedde mijn hele maand aan mijn herexamens (en dan vooral de Graphic Design opdracht) en kon niet zoveel puntjes van mijn lijst schrappen. Om een of andere reden heb ik ook alleen maar puntjes van het einde van mijn lijst geschrapt, dat was alleszins niet expres. Ik hoop dat ik nog een aantal puntjes van mijn lijst kan schrappen voor het einde van september (want dat is wanneer volgens zowel mijzelf als GreenDay de zomer eindigt).

20. Donate lot's of things to a second hand shop We propten een hele hoop gerief in ons mini auto en dropten alles bij de dichtst bijzijnde kringloopwinkel. Ik weet niet precies hoeveel dingen we gedoneerd hebben, maar ik vond het vrij veel! We gaven twee dozen met kleine spulletjes weg, drie zakken kleren, een bureaustoel, een tv en nog wat losse spullen. Allemaal heel erg goed voor mijn 100 things challenge en bovendien gaf het een heel goed gevoel om te weten dat er zoveel minder gerief in huis rondslingert.

21. Sell lot's of things on a second hand site Ik verkocht een paar stofjes online en ben van plan om in de loop van September nog een hele hoop gerief online te gooien. Een work in progress dus.

22. Visit a couple of flea markets Ik heb nog maar één rommelmarkt bezocht dit jaar en daar konden jullie een paar dagen geleden al alles over lezen. Ik hoop nog een paar rommelmarkten te kunnen den in september en ik kijk vooral uit naar mijn favoriete rommelmarkt in Gent die volgend weekend plaatsvind. Hopelijk heb ik opnieuw een beetje geluk. :)

24. Pass my resits! 100% zeker dat ik er op beide door ben, maar ik ben wel al zeker van mijn Graphic Design. Het andere vak (workflow) ging volgens mij wel redelijk, maar ja ge weet toch nooit dat je het volledig verkeerd inschat (zou niet de eerste keer zijn), dus voorzichtig optimisme. Het resultaat ken ik pas op 9 september, wat volgens mij nog belachelijk lang wachten is. #ongeduld

August Book Haul

So, I discovered BookTube. And then I remembered how much I loved books and how I like touching their spines and how I fall in love with their covers. I dumped my book-buying rule (only coffee table books) and bought a bunch of books. Some of them I bough in June & July, but I bought most in August (hence the name of this post). Some I've already read, but most I still have to and I'm looking forward to discovering all those unread pages!

The Wes Anderson Collection by Matt Zoller Seitz - This book was on my wishlist a couple of months ago. Since then I watched a couple more Anderson movies like The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Darjeeling Limited, which I both really liked. I haven't made time to really enjoy this book (shame on me), but now that my 18-day holiday has arrived this will soon change.

Mijn Tas by Elisanna & Fynn - I wasn't really planning on buying this, but then I got a coupon with La Maison Victor and, you know, I bought it. Some patterns look a bit simple, but I would love to make Wiske & Ida. Another thing on my holiday-to-do list.

Art d'Eco by Kelly Eeckhaut - I got this one as a review copy and boy do I need to review this! It's only available in dutch and it's a DIY book like I haven't seen one before. Kelly mixed recycling and upcycling in clothing, the kitchen, beauty and in home decor. I know very little of DIY beauty products, so I'm looking forward to reading those parts.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs - I've heard and read so much about this book and when I saw the pretty hardcover version with all those creepy pictures in a local bookstore I decided to buy it. I don't know how important the pictures are, but I've found out recently that I've read The Graveyard Book without pictures because I read it on my Kindle. I felt bummed by missing the illustrations, that's why I wanted the physical version of this book. Another one on the to-read list in September.

Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell - Ok, I know I risk sounding crazy, but this is my second 1984 copy. That would probably be all right if 1984 was my favourite book ever, but it isn't. Worse, I've tried reading it and I never finished. Yup, madness. BUT! This cover! This is the prettiest cover ever! It was designed by John Gray who also designed lot's of other amazing covers. I am planning on reading this copy though and I really hope I can fall in love with the story this time.

Neverwhere & Stardust by Neil Gaiman - After finishing Neverwhere I realised I had exactly zero copies of Neil Gaiman books. Which is weird, as I'm quite fond of Nail Gaiman and his books. I absolutely loved reading both Stardust and Neverwhere and I also liked the Graveyard Book. So I ordered Stardust & Neverwhere. I would like a copy of The Graveyard Book, but there are two versions and they have both different illustrations and I can't decide which version I like better. Yes, first world problems.

I don't know about you, but for me this is quite the amount of books to have bought in one month (or even a couple of months). Have you guys bought some nice books recently? Or are you planning on buying a specific book?

Flea Market Haul

I have a love hate relationship with flea markets. At the start it always feels like the most promising treasure hunt, but after fifteen minutes I start to get overwhelmed by the huge amount of things piled upon things that people want to sell. Most of the time I want to quit quickly and just curl up and start whining about how I never find anything. But, when I went to the flea market in the Miljoenenkwartier on Saturday I was in luck! I found a couple of pretty awesome things I'd been looking for.

Ik heb een haat-liefde relatie met rommelmarkten. Het begint altijd goed, ik ben altijd enorm hoopvol over de geweldige dingen die ik ga vinden, maar na een kwartiertje raakt ik overweldigd door de gigantische stapels spullen die mensen uit hun huizen gesleurd hebben. Meestal wil ik dan zo snel mogelijk naar huis, om mij daar op een bolletje te rollen en te zagen over hoe ik nooit iets vind. Toen ik naar de rommelmarkt in het Gentse Miljoenenkwartier ging afgelopen zaterdag had ik echter wel geluk! Ik vond een paar leuke dingen waar ik al een tijdje naar op zoek was!

The first item I bought at the fleamarket was a brown apothecary bottle (€1). I do love a vintage glass container of every kind. I have my fair share of mason jars and other cute glass containers. An apothecary jar was something I didn't have yet and I thought this one might look good on my wunderkammer wall.

Ik was nog maar drie kramen ver of mijn oog viel op deze oude apothekersfles. Voor €1 kon ik hem niet laten staan! Ik heb dan ook een beetje een zwakke plek voor glazen flessen en potjes, maar ik had nog niets in dat typische bruine apothekersglas. Hij pas dan ook perfect bij de rest van mijn Wunderkammer muur.

I didn't bought the deer head I saw because it was too pricey (€55) of the awesome vintage advertising sign for some old Brussels brandy (€25), but I did buy this set of three cutting boards (€5). I 've almost bought wooden cutting boards a couple of times, but I never really did. I liked these old one, although I'm not sure how to clean and care for them.

Ik wandelde verder en liet een geweldig mooi hertenhoofd (€55) liggen, net als de originele reclame van een obscuur Brussels gin merk (€25). Ik kocht wel drie houten broodplanken (€5), iets waar ik ook al een tijdje naar op zoek was. Ze hebben een beetje TLC nodig, dus als iemand tips heeft om ze er een beetje frisser te laten uitzien, shoot!

Up next: the Petit Larousse (€2,5). It's an edition from 1924 and oh, how I love old encyclopedias! My grandfather used to own one of the editions of the Petit Larousse, but I'm not sure where it is now. I loved turning the pages and watching the illustrations as a child. I'm not sure what I want to do with it. Originally I wanted to buy an old encyclopedia so I could cut it up like this, but I don't think I will do this with this one. I might be able to use the old illustrations as a back catalogue for when I might need something for my illustration or graphic design assignments.

In het laatste kraam van de straat vond ik ook nog een Petit Larousse van 1924. Ooh, die cover en die prentjes! Mijn boempa had vroeger ook zo een Petit Larousse liggen in zijn woonkamer, maar ik weet helaas niet waar die naartoe gegaan is. Eigenlijk was ik op zoek naar zo een oude encyclopedie om dit met te doen, maar ik vrees dat ik het nooit over mijn hart ga krijgen om hem kapot te snijden. Volgens mij kan ik hem wel gebruiken als inspitariebron voor illustratie en graphic design werk.

And finally, my favourite piece I found this time! An antique Singer sewing machine! It wasn't super cheap (€22), but I really like these machines, they are so pretty. I walked past it, because it wasn't put on display really well. The left in the box they came in and I almost didn't notice it, when I suddenly saw the crest upon the box. I turned back and took a peek inside the box to discover this beauty. Ok, the paint (it's handpainted) isn't in mint condition, but this sewing machine might be a 100 years old is manufactured in 1894! The mechanism works perfectly, there even was fully wounded spool inside it. I've been marvelling about how the mechanism in this machine is almost exactly the same as in my modern sewing machine. Apart from adding a motor, not much has changed. I'm pretty sure this is my favourite flea market find ever! Have you guys ever found something awesom at a flea market?

Tot slot, mijn favoriete vondst! Ik was er al bijna voorbij gelopen toen het logo op de koffer mij plots opviel. Ik dacht "zou het?" en ja hoor, een prachtige antieke Singer naaimachine stond heel onopvallend in het gras. Ze was niet super goedkoop (€22), maar ik vind deze machines echt geweldig, dus ik kon ze niet laten staan. De handgeschilderde decoratie is wel niet in perfect staat, maar hey, deze machine werd in 1894 geproduceerd! Het mechanisme van de machine werkt wel nog steeds perfect en hoe langer ik ze bestudeerde hoe meer ik besefte dat er aan naaimachines, op de motor en het elektronische schermpje na, verdomd weinig veranderd is. Dit is absoluut mijn favoriete rommelmarkt vondst ooit! Wat is jullie favoriete vondst die jullie ooit gedaan hebben op een rommelmarkt?

Last Week [09]

Another week I can really enjoy a much needed holiday (although I'll still need to do a little bit of work for my school). I'm looking forward to it! Next week will be pretty ok though, the hardest parts of my resits is done. I have only one course I need to pass and I already made an assignment for this resit that counts for 50% of the exam. This should work! Because I was working so hard these past weeks I didn't take much pictures, but I scratched a few together for this week's Last Week.

Nog een weekje en de tweede zit zit erop! Dan kan ik eindelijk genieten van mijn zuurverdiende vakantie (hoewel ik nog steeds een opdracht of drie in mijn achterhoofd moet houden en langzaam aan beginnen, zeker als ik door mijn laatste jaar wil raken). Ik kijk alleszins heel hard naar mijn vakantie uit! Gelukkig ga ik deze week ook al ietsje meer tijd hebben, ik heb namelijk maar één examen mee en ik heb al mijn opdrachten voor dat examen afgewerkt. Aangezien die voor 50% meetellen, moet ook dat laatste vak lukken! Omdat ik zo veel werk had de afgelopen weken waren er niet veel foto momenten, maar ik heb er toch een paar bijeengeraapt voor deze Last Week post.

I had a few less pleasant things happening these past weeks. For one I managed to dump almost a complete glass of water on my laptop. Somehow, I believe my quick reflexes and thinking are responsible, it ended up okay. I turned it upside down as fast as I could, meanwhile shutting it off. I let it rest upside down for a while on a towel and after a while I used the blow dryer a bit. I didn't try to start it up again until the next morning and I was so releaved to see it all working fine!

Een tijdje terug gooide ik een volledig glas water over mijn laptop. Horror! Ik reageerde bliksemsnel, hield mijn computer ondersteboven en zette hem onmiddellijk af. Ik probeerde hem met een haardroger uit te drogen en liet hem voor de zekerheid e hele nacht uit staan. De volgende ochtend duwde ik met een bang hart op de start knop, maar hij startte gelukkig normaal op!

I ordered some Neil Gaiman books online, but alas, the covers of the books they sent me didn't match with the ones that I ordered. I tried to explain my problem to customer service, but I didn't feel like they understood my problem or maybe they just didn't care enough. Since I had payed extra because I wanted the specific covers I ordered it did matter to me!

Ik bestelde mijn eerste Neil Gaiman boeken online en had nogal mijn zinnen gezet op een paar speciale covers. Ik betaalde zelf meer om de boeken in die covers te krijgen, maar toen ik mijn pakketje open deed, bleken de boeken er met andere covers in te zitten. De klantendienst van de online site begreep mijn probleem niet (of was niet echt gemotiveerd om het te begrijpen), dus stuurde ik de boeken terug. Zo jammer.

Apparently Schrödinger likes to sleep this way. By the time I'd taken the photo he was wide awake of course. My grandmother took us all to dinner and it was so yummy. I only took photo's of the first course, because I enjoyed the rest of the meal too much to care about Instagramming. :)

Mijn oma trakteerde de hele familie op een super lekker etentje. Ik nam enkel een foto van het voorgerecht, daarna genoot ik gewoon te hard van mijn maaltijd om nog aan foto's te denken. :)

We donated a LOT of stuff to the second hand store. It felt really great seeing all that stuff go from our closets and basement. I didn't exactly count how many items where in our car, but it was pretty much full.

Afgelopen vrijdag staken we heel onze auto VOL met spullen voor de kringloopwinkel. De banken gingen plat om er meer in te kunnen proppen. Achteraf had ik zo een opgelucht gevoel, weer zoveel minder nutteloze rommel in onze kasten en in onze kelder!

On Friday night I stayed indoors and tried redecorating my moodboard. It isn't exactly finished, but things like moodboards need to grow I think. On Saturday I went to a flea market and did some pretty amazing finds. I'll write about it somewhere next week. As for now, have a great Sunday!

Vrijdagavond bleef ik gezellig thuis en besloot mijn prikbord een make-over te geven. Het hangt nog niet helemaal vol, maar dat komt wel nog. Zaterdag gingen we dan weer naar de rommelmarkt en oh boy, ik vond leuke dingen! Daar lezen jullie deze week nog meer over. Nog een prettige zondag verder. :)
