This & That [06]

It is Monday (although, to be fair, it almost isn't Monday anymore where I live), which means I shower you guys with some amazing internet finds. This time you may find them a bit Halloween themed, even though it wasn't my intention when I started this post. Maybe I miss the decorations I normally put up this time of the year, but skipped on this year, who knows...

Animals Bats are some seriously misunderstood creatures. They are so lovely and cuddly. Literally, they love snuggling together when they sleep! If you're not entirely convinced about the adorableness of bats, take a look at the BatsQLD instagram page. I've been following them for a while and they post the cutest bat-related pics (and some sad sob stories about orphan bats).

Books Illustrations like these always make me feel somewhat disappointed with myself, just because I never thought about making a bunch of nifty little illustrations about one of my favourite book series ever. I have to work on that (making such illustrations), but in the mean while I will thoroughly enjoy these one of the Harry Potter series by TomatoZero. Hair I'm still in love with pink hair! I've been for a while now and since I'm seriously contemplating cutting my hair short again, sprucing things up with a little pink seems like a good option. I only need to find a hair salon that'll be able to paint it the exact shade of pink I want.

DIY Pillow Case // DIY Kussensloop

A while ago I discovered the new Maaike Boot collection at Veritas. I liked the fabrics so much, I decided to make a relaxation pillow with them. Actually it's nothing more than a simple pillow with a pretty pillow case, but when I use it, I signal to myself it's time to relax. That means me, my pillow and a  lovely book or my new favourite series and no worries for a couple of hours. Whilst making my new pillow case I took the opportunity to update my old pillow case tutorial and wrote a brand new one (hint: your reading it).

Onlangs trakteerde ik mijzelf op een paar stofjes uit de nieuwe Maaike Boot collectie van Veritas en besloot mijzelf het equivalent van een “uit gaan slapen” kussen te maken. Ik was namelijk een beetje jaloers op al die mooie kussens die al de online revue passeerden. Mijn kussen dient natuurlijk niet om elders te gaan slapen, maar als relax kussen. Het soort kussen dat ik erbij wil nemen als ik een paar uur van mijn leven reserveer om door te brengen met een goed boek of een leuke serie. Een kussen dat voor mijzelf de ‘me-time’ modus activeert zodat ik ook echt kan genieten van wat ik op dat moment aan het doen ben en niet de hele tijd schuldgevoelens moet hebben over alle “nuttige” dingen die ik op dat moment zou kunnen doen. Omdat ik iedereen zo een egoïstisch momentje wel gun, besloot ik ook dat het hoog tijd was om mijn oude kussen tutorial eens up te daten met een splinternieuwe versie. Hoezah!

You can follow the drawn tutorial above (but it's only in Dutch, sorry), which'll teach you how to make a very simple pillow case using only one piece of fabric. The lenght of this piece equals twice the length of your pillow + 6 inches (15 cm). The hight of your pillowcase equals the hight of your pillow + 1 inch (2 cm). Or you can follow the (slightly more difficult) phototutorial below. For this second option you'll need three pieces of fabric, a pillow, a sewing machine, fabric scissors and some thread. 

Je kan de getekende handleiding hierboven volgen om de eenvoudigste versie van de kussensloop te maken. Je hebt dan één lange lap stof nodig, waarbij de lengte van de lap gelijk is aan 2x de lengte van het kussen + 15cm. Of je kan de iets moeilijkere versie van onderstaande foto-tutorial volgen. Hierbij kan je met verschillende stofjes werken die je kan combineren. Daarnaast heb je natuurlijk een kussen nodig dat (al dan niet dringend) een nieuwe kussensloop kan gebruiken. Een naaimachine, garen en stofschaar mogen ook niet ontbreken.

First you'll need to measure the pillow. I used a pillow by Ikea that measures 60x40 cm. This is the size you'll use for the front of the pillow. The back of the pillow exists of two pieces of fabric, each measures 2/3 of the length of the front of the pillow. So for my pillow each piece was (60/3)-2= 40 cm.

Meet het kussen op. Mijn kussen is een hoofdkussen van Ikea dat 60x40 cm meet. Deze maat gebruik je voor de afmetingen van het voorpand van het kussen. Het achterpand bestaat uit twee lappen stof, waarvan de lengte bij beide gelijk is aan 2/3 van de lengte van het voorpand. In mijn geval (60/3)*2= 40 cm.

Next you take the two pieces that'll make the back of the pillow and on each piece you will make a neat side. You lay your piece of fabric wrong side up and make two folds, each of 1 cm. Use an iron the flatten the folds. Stitch the folds on both pieces.

Om te beginnen neem je de delen van het achterpand en leg ze met de goede zijde naar onder. Nu maak je twee keer een omslag aan één zijkant van de achterpanden van 1 cm. Gebruik een strijkijzer om de plooien mooi plat te strijken. Stik de omslag van de beide delen vast.

Now both pieces of the back of the pillow should have one neat side. Lay the front of your pillow with the good side face up. Now lay the pieces of the back of the pillow face down, make sure the good side of the back pieces lay in the middel of the pillow, on top of each other. Now secure the fabrics by pinning them together. Stitch 1 cm from the edge of your pillow case, go all the way around. You can use a zigzag stitch for making a second round, when you want to secure the fabric against fraying. All you have to do now is turn your pillow case inside out, put your pillow in it and admire your handiwork!

Nu hebben de twee stukken van het achterpand allebei een afgewerkte zijkant. Je legt de stukken van het achterpand met de afgewerkte zijkanten in het midden op het voorpand. Zorg ervoor de je stof met de goede kanten op elkaar ligt. Indien je wil kan je nu een paspel tussen de beide helften van het kussen stikken. Een goede handleiding daarvoor vind je hier. Indien je geen paspel wilt, dan moet je enkel nog de beide delen aan elkaar spelden en rondom rond stikken met je naaimachine met ongeveer 1 cm naadwaarde. Nadat ik beide delen aan elkaar gestikt had, heb ik nog een keer rond het kussen gestikt met een zigzag steek, zodat de stof niet kan uitrafelen. Draai je kussen binnenste buiten, prop het kussen erin en geniet van de aanblik van je nieuwe kussen!

Last Week [12]

It's almost a month since my last Last Week post. I took very little photos these past weeks for various reasons, one of them not doing much special and not having much opportunity for taking photos, for another my phone that kept freezing up and crashing almost all the time. I finally got too fed up to co-exist with it any longer and I started looking for another phone. Somehow I ended up with the Samsung Galaxy S5. I love this phone! And my not having it dropped once this past week is a contest to that (I'm clumsy, this phone needs a cover, asap, or it will die a horrible floor crashing death). I also sincerely hope this new phone will bring a new wave of photos for these Last Weeks posts. :)

You guys probable also now about the inevitable way the world works. Right after you buy a phone you can barely afford you discover your old laptop has somehow fried it's own HDD. Whilst being in a drawer for a couple of months. You notice this of course after you decide your new laptop really has to go for reparation because one of the hinges of the screen fell apart during last school year (but you never got to sending the laptop back, because you need it every second of the day for school assignments). After the laptop fiasco you also notice your headphones are broken and on their way to irreparable doom... Luckily (ahum) all this happens when they (the new laptop and the headphones) are still in guarantee, so hopefully (and fingers crossed, knock on wood and all the shit) the companies will take responsibility and repair/substitute everything as they should...

Before you start thinking otherwise: this month wasn't all that bad either. I found a company in Ghent for my internship next year in april (and it's in cycling distance from my house!), I've found a mentor for another school project (for which I'll attempt designing book covers!), I'll be working on our school's magazine as team leader (or as I like to be called: Editor-in-chief), which is both scary and exactly what I wanted. I also read a lot of books and made pumpkin soup...

I looked a Schrödinger looking back and being too cute. And I went to a sale from one of my favourite Belgian brands: Just in Case. I stocked up on cosy sweaters and cute skirts. I'm really looking forward to colder weather, crisp morning air and the perfect opportunities to wear said sweaters..

I also went to FACTS, a convention about nerdy, scifi, fantasy and Japanese things. It was my second time and I had a blast! (also it was very tiring). I didn't spent much, I only bought one Star Wars (The Empire Wants You!) t-shirt, but I loved the windowshopping I did all day. Also one of my friends let me taste some mochi, which was both a weird and yummy experience. :)

Gelezen in September

Ondertussen zijn we half oktober en ik kom nog af met wat ik in September gelezen heb. Dat komt omdat deze post geen makkelijke bevalling was. Ik heb veel gelezen in September, mede dankzij de read-a-thon, maar ook omdat ik toen nog een beetje vakantie had. Ik hoop ook dat ik jullie niet te veel verveel met mijn hernieuwde liefde voor boeken?

Soms heb ik het gevoel dat ik over niet veel anders meer schrijf, maar dat is omdat veel lezen zo nieuw is en omdat ik nog aan het uitvissen ben hoe, hoeveel en welke boeken ik op mijn blog aan bod wil laten komen. Ieder boek reviewen zie ik bijvoorbeeld niet echt zitten, maar een massa-review dump zoals vandaag één keer in de zoveel tijd lijkt mij wel iets. Ik ga nog altijd niet ieder boek bespreken, enkel diegene die mij om welke reden dan ook bijgebleven zijn.

De maand begon met Ready Player One van Ernest Cline, een boek dat ik eigenlijk direct opnieuw wou beginnen lezen nadat ik het toeklapte. In het begin was ik niet helemaal overtuigd van dit boek, het begon enorm traag, met iets te veel herhaling naar mijn zin, maar nadat we grondig kennis gemaakt hebben met de wereld in het boek neemt het verhaal plots een sneltreinvaart. Vanaf dan kon ik het amper wegleggen. De spanning droop van de pagina's en het hoofdpersonage wist mij een paar keer serieus te verrassen. Een dikke aanrader dus!

Ik kon ook eindelijk de nieuwe Requiem de Vampierridder bemachtigen. Nummer 11 in deze reeks blies mij niet omver, maar de reeks in totaal: dikke waaw. Alleen al omwille van de artwork, zo zalig getekend! Ook de wereld waarin deze strips zich afspelen is af. Af, maar twisted..

Boek nummer drie afgelopen maand was The Monstrumologist door Rick Yancey, een horror boek! Ik was heel erg benieuwd naar dit boek, nadat ik de naam een paar keer had horen vallen op The Readables. Toen ik een jaar of 8 was las ik heel vaak horror verhalen, dat waren de boeken waarin ik mij thuis voelde, ook al wou dat zeggen dat ik 's avonds voor het slapen gaan eens onder mijn bed moest kijken om zeker te zijn dat er niets zat. Het was dus een beetje uit nostalgie dat ik naar dit boek greep en ik werd niet teleurgesteld! Ik vond het verhaal erg leuk, af en toe werd er wat met moeilijke woorden gestrooid om de wetenschappelijke kant van Monstrumology te benadrukken en af en toe keek ik eens extra over mijn schouder 's avonds, voor de zekerheid. ;)

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children was het volgende boek dat ik vast nam. Dit boek nam me onmiddellijk mee in zijn wereld en het duurde niet lang voor het uitgelezen was. Ik kijk al uit naar boek twee in deze reeks (dat al uit is, maar ik ben het zelf nog een beetje aan het uitstellen), want volgens mij staan er ons spannende tijden te wachten!

Tijdens de read-a-thon las ik ook het het eerste deel in de Saga reeks. Ook over deze graphic novel had al heel wat positief gehoord en gelezen. Ik ben nogal vaak picky als het op strips aankomt, omdat ik de tekenstijl enorm belangrijk vind en toen ik hem in de lokale stripwinkel in mijn handen had, bleek hij ook nog eens prachtig getekend én ingekleurd. Van zodra hij hier door de brievenbus viel (sorry lokale stripwinkel) las ik hem uit. Het verhaal zit goed in elkaar, de fantastische elementen zijn fantastisch en ik hou echt van de hoeveelheid fantasie die in dit verhaal zit, zonder dat het kinderachtig wordt. Nummer twee & drie staan hier op de wishlist!

Het laatste boek dat ik in september las, was Scarlet, deel twee van The Lunar Chronicles serie. Ik las boek één, Cinder, al een hele tijd geleden en moest Scarlet toen als uit geweest zijn, had ik het direct gelezen. Sprookjes + science fiction = zalige cocktail! Ik moest mij een beetje inhouden om dit boek niet in één ruk uit te lezen, want ook Scarlet is een geweldig boek. Naast Scarlet las ik ook nog twee novella's (kortverhalen) uit The Lunar Chronicles: Glitches & The Queens Army. Vooral het laatste verhaal vond ik leuk, omdat het een diepere kijk biedt op de geschiedenis van één van de personages uit Scarlet.

Wat hebben jullie de laatste tijd nog gelezen? Iets dat jullie mij zouden aanraden? (Also, in september haalde ik mijn Goodreads challenge om 30 boeken te lezen dit jaar, iets waar ik wel trots op ben, want vorig jaar haalde ik die dertig boeken helemaal niet. :))

Quick blackboard look-alike DIY

I got a super quick DIY for you today! I'm guessing everybody already knows about all the things you can accomplish with blackboard paint.  I really love blackboard paint, I would paint a whole wall with it if I could. Even though I love it, I still find it quite pricey and it's always a mess when you have to clean the brushes. Luckily there is a very cheap and quick way to make a blackboard look-alike! All you need is a frame (I used Virserum from Ikea), a piece of black paper and a Window Marker. Cut your pieces of paper the size of your frame, assemble the frame and you can start using your marker! To clean your board, you can easily wipe it down with a paper towel.

You can also use the Window Marker for writing on an old mirror or instead of using black paper as background you can use a pretty fabric. Lots of possibilities and they're all quick, simple & cheap. :)

Ik heb vandaag een mini DIY voor jullie! Iedereen heeft wellicht al gehoord van krijtbordverf en de zalige dingen die je daarmee kunt doen. Moest het van mij afhangen dan had ik een hele muur in krijtbordverf. Het blijft echter wel een duur medium + er komt een hoop tijd & opkuis bij kijken om zelf een krijtbord te maken. Gelukkig bestaat er ook een supersnelle en goedkope manier om een krijtbord look-alike te maken. Het enige wat je nodig hebt is een kader (ik gebruikte Virserum van Ikea), een stuk zwart papier en een Window Marker. Snijdt het zwarte stuk papier op maat van de kader en plaats het in de kader. Je Window Marker goed schudden en je kan beginnen schrijven! Om je bord schoon te maken hoef je er enkel over te gaan met een stukje keukenpapier of een vochtige vod.

Je kan ook een oude spiegel gebruiken om op te schrijven of in plaats van papier een leuk stofje als achtergrond gebruiken. :)

Summer to do list [UPDATE 3.0]

I'm a bit disappointed by how little I managed to strike of my summer list. I had hoped I would be able to relax and enjoy summer thoroughly, but when I look at my list I didn't apparently. To be fair, that isn't entirely my fault. I had two resits and for both I got new assignments that happened to be a shitload of work. By the end of August I was already a little bit frustrated because I didn't feel like I enjoyed my summer holiday at all and the three weeks that rested me in September where filled by relaxing & guilt (week 1), horror & desperation whilst looking for an intern company, a social organisation and a mentor (week two), frustration and more desperation (week three). I didn't start my new school year refreshed and recharged, I was already stressing about the workload two weeks before the year started which I absolutely hated.

Another reason why my list didn't really work, was because I never actually planned these things in my agenda. I just jotted them down and hoped I would magically be presented with opportunities for making them happen. Which of course was never. So although I like the idea of an autumn list, I'm not sure I'll make one. Sometimes I just feel too constricted by all these lists I make and I want to go a more spontaneous way.

So, now you know why I didn't manage to strike of a lot of things from my list, onto the I did manage to finish!

05. Create a portfolio (website) I didn't manage to create a new portfolio website, but I did create a new portfolio! I know it's not completely the same thing, but I haven't found the time to sit down and think about my website's design and I needed the portfolio so it's an almost sort of ticked of part of my list. I've uploaded my portfolio onto Issuu and I've put it below so everbody can enjoy it. ;)

07. Read A Game of Thrones Another one I didn't actually do, but (but!) that's because I decided to start reading A Game of Thrones only after my Goodreads Reading Challenge was completed. I feared I would otherwise stress too much about not getting to my objective for 2014. Also, because of the read-a-thon I've read almost 2000 pages in September alone (which is more than the average number of pages in a Song of Fire and Ice novel) and I've read 4200 pages in the last three months. So yes, I consider this also a win.

11. Start looking for companies for an internship (abroad) Although I was very enthusiastic at the end of last year about going to Berlin for my internship, I realised this would mean I would see the Boy even less this school year than last school year, I wouldn't be able to hang out with friends at all and I didn't had the energy to cope with the hassle of the paperwork of an international internship. So I quit the "abroad" idea even tough I really want to live abroad for an extended period of time at least once in my life and I'm not sure if that'll ever be possible once I'll start working. But, I do know I'll enjoy the Boy, my friends and the time I can spend at home because I so need it. I did start looking for companies in Ghent, I called a couple and even got the invitation to go talk to a few. Now it's fingers crossed I get picked!

13. Find some cool tutorials in Illustrator and Photoshop & learn some new stuff I had hoped to do this in my free time, as a relaxing bit of practise, but turns out I needed to watch some tutorials because of the resit assignment for Graphic Design and the cover of my portfolio magazine. I'm not completely happy with that cover (a low poly/polygonal portrait), but it took me almost a whole day of drawing f-ing triangles, so I used it. Even though the colours are off (even more so thanks to Blogger :/).

The ones I didn't finish:

• Go on a picknick
• Spent almost as many hours outside as behind my laptop
• Follow & finish some online courses
• Go cycling in the Leie vallery
• Go sketching outside
• Start my driving lessons
• Experiment with different printing techniques
• Visit the Bourgoyen
• Organise a craft party
• Make or do something I pinned on Pinterest once a week
• Sew to my heart's content
• Finish my Russian travel journal

I'll just have to keep them in mind for the following months and next summer. And if anyone has tips for how to do more fun activities, please let me know. I need to figure out this balancing work vs fun thing otherwise I'll go mad.

September Read-a-thon Wrap-up

On Sunday the Read-a-thon ended, so it's time for an evaluation of my first read-a-thon week! I absolutely loved it! I had a lot of fun reading and although I didn't have as much time for reading as I thought I would have it went quite well! I read three books and two graphic novels and I managed to complete all my challenges.

I started the week with Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children and I finished this by Wednesday. On Tuesday I got Saga Volume One in the mail and I read this one on Tuesday and Wednesday. I read The Assault on Thursday and Friday, followed by V for Vendetta. I finished the week with Scarlet. I didn't get to read 1984 and Watchmen, but I hope I'll get to those sometime soon.

Read 100 pages a day I believe I failed on Monday, by reading only 75 pages before falling asleep in my reading chair. The following days I always read at least a 100th pages, so I don't consider this assignment a fail. I've read 1312 page's in total this week, which means 187 pages a day on average. So, goal reached!

Read books from four different genres I've read books from the Young Adult, the Fantasy, the Graphic Novel, the Science Fiction and the Classics & WOII-genre.

Read at least one Dutch books I thought this would be a hard one, since I almost never read Dutch books. I also had a challenge on my 26 before 27 list to read a Dutch classic. So I picked up The Assault and I even managed to finish it. :)

Read a book from a series I started but never finished For this challenge I decided to read Scarlet, the second book in the Lunar Chronicles. I hesitated between this one and Speaker for the Dead and I almost picked the latter because of the lower page count, but by the end of the week I was craving another shot of my favourite genre and I choose the Fantasy/YA novel. Afterwards I had a though time leaving the characters behind and I also read two novella's in the Lunar Chronicles series, namely Glitches and The Queen's Army.

Did I like this read-a-thon thing? Yes, definitely! I finally had a good excuse to spend hours in bed reading. I loved being submerged in books, it has been a long time ago since I read this way. Normally I would spent holidays reading all day, but with the busy uni years I sort of forgot about binge reading. I would prefer that the next read-a-thon would be in a holiday week (or maybe a 24 hour read-a-thon on a long weekend or something), because now I did neglect my school assignments a bit..
