27 in 27 - update

It's been two months since I had my birthday and I started working on my 27 in 27 list. High time to give you guys a little update! I made some progress with a couple of things (mainly reading and buying books) and I've even managed to finish two of the challenges on the list!

Do the 50 book challenge: 15/50

I've read 15 books these past few months. I've put them in a little list below and added some hearts as a quick rating system. Some of them I have reviewed, some of them I really would like to review here, but I'm unsure if and when that will happen. Buy a book in a local/independent bookstore every month

I really like this challenge! It gives me an extra reason to look for new (to me) independent bookshops in Ghent!

The first book I bought was Les Contes de Beedle le Barde (The Tales of Beedle the Bard) by J.K. Rowling. I bought it in french, because I've been wanting to read a french book for ages, but I didn't know what level I can handle. So, I thought reading a children's book was a good idea. I bought it in Limerick, a lovely indy bookshop not far from Ghent-Sint-Pieters train station. So if you missed your train and you have an hour to spare, you should pay it a visit. They have a wide collection Dutch & English books, both fiction and non-fiction and they even had a book case with Swedish books!

The second book I bought was "Joe Speedboot" by Tommy Wieringa at the Paard van Troje yard sale. Normally I don't read much Dutch books, but I want to change that, so I picked up a book I've been meaning to read since for-ever. Language diversification, here I come! ;)

Do a 365 days project

This one isn't going so well, mostly because I just don't have the time for making sketches. I've made about 30 sketches, I think, but then I got overwhelmed with other projects and sketching just slipped my mind. I think I will re-phrase this challenge to: make 365 sketches or drawings. This way when I have more free time later this year I can number all my individual sketches and drawings even if they're made on the same day. I also think this would still make a cool project and a nice collection.

Find a day planner that works for me

I've made myself a day planner and after almost three months I'm still very happy with it. I've put this planner together myself and wrote a DIY post about it a while ago.

Watch all the Star Wars movies (marathon style)

I've watched four of the six Star Wars movies, although I didn't marathon them. We've watched the first tree (Episode IV, V & VI) one after the other in February. I did enjoy them and we watched remastered versions so the special effects didn't look too shabby. We recently watched the fourth one (Episode I) and although I liked it when I was 12, I didn't like it this time. I'm not looking forward to seeing the other two movies...

Learn how to silk screen

I've learned how to silkscreen! I took me a while to write about it, but last Wednesday that blogpost finally went online. It's only in Dutch though, sorry! I really liked learning how to screenprint, both semi-automatic on print-screen machines and manual when we printed on textiles. Hopefully I'll be able to do it again somewhere in the future. I think it would be fun to come up with cool t-shirt designs or with a nice art-print (or maybe to print a whole mini-zine in one go! *ideas*).

I'm not doing too bad, I think, considering I've had two very busy months. I hope I can put a little bit more effort in my hobby's and my plans during my internship or at least afterwards during july and august. :)

Print & Sign: zeefdrukken

De eerste zes weken van het tweede semester stond er een nieuw vak op ons programma: print & sign. De afgelopen weken amuseerde ik mij geweldig in dit vak, want ik mocht drie weken spenderen tussen ze zeven, de drukinkt en de rakels. Voor wie die termen absoluut niets zeggen: we leerden zeefdrukken! We overliepen het hele proces, van de eerste smeer lichtgevoelige emulsie tot de laatste spat drukinkt die we uit het scherm moesten wassen op het einde van de les. Voor mij was dit extra interessant, want ik wou al een paar jaar leren zeefdrukken én bovendien stond het ook op mijn 27 in 27-lijst!

Er waren drie opdrachten die bij deze lessen hoorden: *iets* doen met ons eigen gezicht, een kaartje ontwerpen en een design voor een t-shirt maken. Voor de gezicht-opdracht recycleerde ik een low-poly illustratie die ik vorig jaar maakte, haalde die door Photoshop om ze om te zetten naar een bitmap (want bij zeefdrukken kan je alleen maar met 100% van een kleur drukken) en drukte er toen op los. Ik vreesde eerst dat mijn gezicht niet herkenbaar zou zijn op de kaartjes, maar dat valt wel goed mee. :)

Voor onze tweede opdracht, een kaartje in 2 kleuren, maakten we gebruik van het zalig ontwerp van één van mijn groepsgenoten. Dat kaartje drukken ging echter niet zo vlot. We spendeerden heel veel tijd aan het zoeken naar het juiste papier in de papierruimte (= een beetje een rommel van gigantisch zware stapels papier) en moesten toen ook nog de moeilijke beslissing maken met welke 2 kleuren we zouden gaan drukken. Uiteindelijk deden we ook nog onze aanleg in de machine verkeerd, waardoor het heel moeilijk werd om de twee lagen exact op elkaar te leggen. Toen we onze tweede kleur aan het drukken waren, vonden we het ontwerp tr mannelijk en dus besloten we om op de achterkant van de verkeerd in de machine gelegde kaartjes ons ontwerp in één kleur te drukken, iets wat we eigenlijk mooier vonden dan onze 2-kleurendruk. Soms is minder gewoon beter.

Voor onze laatste les zeefdruk ten slotte, stond drukken op textiel op het programma. Ik sloeg een voorraadje t-shirts in, maakte een design in Illustrator geïnspireerd door de recente Twin Peaks marathon die het Vriendje en ik hielden en drukte mijn afbeelding op alles wat er onder mijn print-molen passeerde.

Persoonlijk vond ik op textiel drukken het leukste onderdeel van onze lessen. Het was ook het enige onderdeel waarbij we handmatig met de rakel de inkt door de zeef mochten drukken, bij het drukken op papier gebeurde dit onderdeel automatisch. We moesten dan enkel het papier handmatig in de machine leggen, op een pedaal duwen en het papier opnieuw uit de machine nemen. Ik wou natuurlijk per se handmatig leren zeefdrukken, want zo een machine in mijn kelder, dat gaat er 100% zeker niet van komen. Op zich is zeefdrukken thuis wel doenbaar, denk ik, maar dan moet je wel tegen al de rommel die het met zich meebrengt kunnen. De zeven uitwassen na het drukken of de onbelichte emulsie uit te zeef spoelen is geen proper werk en de kans is groot dat je de muur en vloer ook van een nieuwe laag kleur voorziet.

Ik weet dat er in Antwerpen een zeefdruk atelier is, waar je gebruik kan maken van alle materialen om zelf te drukken, misschien dat er in Gent ook zoiets te vinden is. Het lijkt mij alleszins erg leuk om af en toe eens iets te doen met mijn ontwerpen en dan is zeefdrukken wel een gemakkelijke manier om snel aan een aantal druks te raken.

Last Month

It's been a while since my last "Last Week" update, so I decided to do a "Last Month" update this time. January and February have been busy months and March won't be any better. Even though I'm working for school a lot, I also try to do some fun thing now and again. I've visited a couple of exhibitions (and then wrote about it in our school's paper, which is one of my projects this year) and when to a concert.

Last month I made myself a day planner (and I just recently wrote a blog post about it) and I read a lot of graphic novels.

I practised my handwritten typography a little bit & tested some new drawing tools. // Last year somebody gave me a little weasel that was killed by their neighbour's cat. I finally got the time to put it into a little bit of hydrogen peroxide (the dosage you use to clean wounds with) and it cleaned up nicely. It's so tiny! It lost one of it's super tiny mollars a couple of days ago and I had a very hard time putting it back in using a pair of tweezers. The picture doesn't really show how little it is, but it does show how pretty the tissue in the nose cavity is. #pleasedontbecreepedout

I had three print screening lessons these past weeks. I wrote a post about it, but it hasn't gone up yet, as I'm still waiting to get my hands on one of our projects. I loved learning screenprinting, hopefully I'll be able to use my newly acquired skills sometime in the future. // Like I said, it wasn't all hard work these past weeks. I went to the Sabaton concert. It was the third time I went to one of their shows and, as always, the ambiance was great, although people tend to go a bit crazy at their shows.

I also visited the Berlinde de Bruyckere exhibition at SMAK. I really liked some of her sculptures, although I'm pretty sure I appreciate them for the wrong reasons. I like the craftsmanship that goes into them, I like how they make me wonder what techniques and materials are used. I like art that makes me appreciate the knowledge and ability of the creator. That's one of the reasons I don't like modern art. It always seems to need a little plaque telling you about the intentions of the creator or how it should make you feel.

Wandering around Ghent by night & admiring my first screen printing project. I used a low-poly illustration of myself (we needed to print something with our face on) that I ran through photoshop in order to make it a bitmap image.

I also went to the Carll Cneut exhibition and watched the three original Star Wars movies. I can recommend both those activities. Seeing the illustrations of Carll Cneut in person was something else than seeing them printed in children books. There is so much more depth in his illustrations, so many details that are lost in the (scanning?) process. I also liked listening to the story of his childhood. It seemed like he had lot's of fun as a child. As for the Star Wars novels, I don't think I ever saw them completely until now. I saw pieces of each of the movies and I liked how my pieced together version of the story didn't completely fit the real story and I'm glad I finally watched them. We still have to watch the three newer movies.

In our third screen printing lesson we learned how the screen print textiles. Again lot's of fun and we printed very fancy gold prints.

Workspace Wednesday

Poeh, de eerste twee maanden van het jaar vlogen voorbij en ik spendeerde het grootste deel van mijn tijd met mijn schoolopdrachten. Hoewel een groot deel van mijn opdrachten nog verre van af zijn, kan ik toch al een paar van de opdrachten die hier de laatste weken mijn scherm/bureau passeerden laten zien.

Voor onze lessen Print & Sign (waarover later meer) moesten we een kaartje ontwerpen. Ik haalde ik een paar typografische schetsen uit mijn schetsboek, die ik snel opkuiste in Photoshop. Uiteindelijk gingen we voor het zalige design van één van mijn groepsgenoten en besloot ik de schetsen in te kleuren met Illustrator. De "Art washes from the soul the dust of every day life" is één van mijn favoriete quotes ooit.

Voor één van mijn opdrachten graphic design mochten we zelf ons onderwerp kiezen. Ik koos het ontwerpen van bookcovers. Momenteel is dat vooral nog veel "work in progress", maar er begint toch al wat kleur en vorm te komen in mijn eerste cover. Ik ben ook nog altijd druk bezig met het lezen van de boeken waarvoor ik covers moet ontwerpen, iets dat veel trager gaat dan ik verwacht had...

DIY Day Planner

Voor 2015 wou ik een agenda die aan al mijn rare vereisten voldeed. Ik wou een agenda met genoeg ruimte om iedere maand lijstjes te maken, met een maandoverzicht aan het begin van iedere maand zodat ik makkelijk kon zien wat er op de planning stond en met een weekoverzicht waarbij er bij iedere dag toch voldoende plaats was voor notities en voor mijn blogplannen bij te noteren. Omdat ik niet direct zo een agenda vond, besloot ik er zelf eentje in elkaar te steken.

Mijn agenda bestaat uit een 12-tal bundeltjes (katernen), die ieder 16 pagina's tellen en een harde voor- en achterflap. Ik bond de bundeltjes en de flappen samen met een koptische binding (coptic stitch). In het begin ging dit niet super snel, maar al bij al viel het wel mee om zo zelf een boek in te binden. Ik gebruikte onderstaande tutorial om mijzelf de koptische binding aan te leren.

Ondertussen gebruik ik mijn agenda al een paar maand en hij lijkt goed te werken voor mij. Ik kan makkelijk bijhouden wat ik wil lezen, hou uitgaven bij die ik anders zeker zou vergeten en probeer al mijn schooltaken in te plannen. Het enige onderdeeltje dat de laatste tijd veel te weinig gebruikt wordt, is het deeltje om mijn blogposts te plannen. Ik zou ook geen neen zeggen tegen wat meer kleur, maar een agenda in kleur printen, was een beetje te duur.

Voor wie zelf nog zou willen een eigen agenda maken, heb ik de bestanden online geplaatst. In de map zit per maand een pdf. Mijn agenda is iets kleiner dan dan A5 formaat, zodat de pdf's perfect op A4 papier kunnen geprint worden. Iedere maand bestaat uit een bundeltje van 4 bladen, die bijgesneden moeten worden (aan de hand van de snijtekens op de pdf's) en daarna in 2 gevouwen. Uiteindelijk bestaat iedere katern uit 16 bladzijden (behalve de 1e katern, die heeft een extra blad met het jaartal op).
